The Khufu ship is one of the oldest and largest boats on earth.
The Khufu ship is a prehistoric Egyptian Pharaoh’s boat buried inside his funeral pyramid. On 26 May 1954, archaeologist Kamal el-Mallakh discovered the Khufu ship when he dug under a stone wall on the south side of the Great Pyramid.
It is often called a “solar barge” as it is believed by historians that it was put inside Khufu’s burial chamber to allow him to cruise across the heavens with the sun god Ra; after his death.
Experts are being forced to learn ‘shipbuilding’ from the scratch because it is unknown how ancient Egyptians had built their vessels.
The Khufu ship can now be seen inside the specially-built Giza Solar Boat Museum, just outside the pyramid.
Khufu, also known to the Greek world as Cheops, commissioned the Great Pyramid of Giza. He was the second Pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty and ruled more than 2,500 years before Jesus was born.
